THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA

Once upon a time, there was a handsome prince who wanted to marry a real princess, but he could not find one. His mother, the queen, wanted to help her son find a real princess.

One stormy night, a young lady came to their castle to get out of the rain. She said she was a princess, but she did not look like one. She was wet from the rain and looked like a beggar.

The queen wanted to find out if the young lady was a real princess, so she invited her to spend the night. The queen secretly placed a pea on the young lady’s bed, then put twenty mattresses on top of the pea.

Picture 3: It is the next morning inside the castle. The pretty young lady in a night gown is sitting atop the bed stacked high with 20 mattresses, holding her aching back in pain as she talks to the queen mother standing beside the bed. The queen mother is smiling with a knowing look on her face.

The next morning, the young lady told the queen. “I felt something hard in the bed, and I could not sleep at all.”

Then, the queen knew that the young lady was a real princess. Only a real princess would be able to feel the pea through twenty mattresses! The handsome prince had found a real princess at last. They were married and lived happily ever after.

The End
